Joint cracks, stiffness, and inflammation are typical challenges you may associate with growing older. But, that’s not always the case. A 2018 study by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease found 61 million people between the ages of 18 and 64 were affected with arthritis – a disorder known to affect joints. That statistic doesn’t even include those that may suffer from other joint-related pain. This shows us that joint pain isn’t just a concern for the elderly. Joints can be a crunchy topic for anyone. You may be wondering what you can do to avoid joint trouble or, if you are already in the suffering stage, what you can do to alleviate some of that pain. Let’s help you out by talking about healthy habits.
Adjust your Diet – Foods and Supplements
First, it always goes without saying – healthy joints start with the healthy habits of a good diet (for you). Pay attention to foods that might make you feel particularly inflamed, and try cutting them out of your diet for a couple of days and assessing your joint concerns. Many people point to sugar as an ingredient that makes them feel bad, and it’s often the culprit in inflammation.[AW1] While we totally enjoy celebrating with a piece of cake or a scoop of ice cream – keep it in moderation and know you may not be doing your body any favors.
If you are not on board with taking food out of your diet – perhaps adding foods and/or supplements into your diet is a better approach. The goal is that you feel less pain – not more. This is not a situation where no pain, no gain rings true. If you add something to your diet, always take an inventory of your body to determine if you’re feeling better or worse when you’re consuming something. In general, some foods generally help with inflammation:
- Fatty Fish – anything that’s high in Omega-3s
- Nuts – look for nuts high in ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) like walnuts
- Leafy Greens – filled with all sorts of vitamins that keep you feeling great
- Olive Oil – great to use on salads or in cooking (don’t burn it)
Tip: Knock all those good foods off your list for the day by having a salmon salad with chopped walnuts and oil/vinegar as your dressing.
If you’re not able to get fish regularly into your diet, a good fish oil capsule is something that can be a game-changer. Don’t skimp on the price because rancid fish oil will surely leave you with a bad time. Not only can it make you sick in the short-term, but it also won’t help you in the long-term.

Topicals – Take the Edge Off
You eat right, you exercise, and you take a butt-ton of supplements, but you still have pain. Now what? Topicals can be your last defense when the pain is already happening.
Most creams, ointments, gels, etc., have two penetration methods: Transdermal and Standard. Transdermal topical products are formulated so that they can penetrate deeply or get into your bloodstream via skin surface application.
