Relive Everyday is a proud partner of the Autism Hope Alliance – an organization that embodies hope for families facing the diagnosis of autism through education, financial support, and volunteerism. For the entirety of National Autism Awareness Month, we are going to be doing our part and spreading awareness about ASD – and today we wanted to share information on the role CBD can play for families with ASD.
Autism may be difficult for some to understand. We don’t know the causes, there is no cure, and the rate of diagnosis is climbing. In April 2018, the CDC updated its autism prevalence estimates to 1 in 59 children, up from 1 in 166 children in 2004. That’s 1% of the global population. Doctors typically treat symptoms in children with antipsychotic medications that have a wide range of side effects and not all children respond to these treatments.
How Does CBD Work in the Body?
CBD is short for cannabidiol. CBD is a non-intoxicating molecule that is part of the flower of cannabis plants. Humans have what is called an endocannabinoid system (ECS) which helps our bodies maintain homeostasis and balance in the systems that regulate sleep, appetite, mood, motor control, immune function, pleaser, reproduction, memory, and temperature.
Disease, injury, and general imbalance can influence how well the ECS works. CBD naturally stimulates the ECS and helps it maintain balance by interacting with specific cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system.
How is This Helpful for Autism?
CBD has several properties that could impact the physical health of those with autism including neuroprotection, anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, and an analgesic. Studies show these properties contribute to its success in treating depression, anxiety, epilepsy, pain, PTSD, and addiction. These are conditions that like autism are typically treated with antipsychotic medications. The thinking is that if CBD is successful with these other conditions, perhaps it can help with autism as well.
Is CBD Effective with Autism?
Anecdotal evidence from parents of autistic children points to a reduction of aggressive behavior, a decrease in seizures, and improved speech. A landmark Israeli study published in Neurology showed that the conditions in 80% of the autistic children in the study using CBD improved. 60 children were treated with a high CBD cannabis oil, a solution of 20% CBD and 1% THC for 7 months. 80% of parents reported a decrease in problem behaviors. 62% reported significant improvement. 50% of the children demonstrated improved communication. 40% reported reductions in anxiety.
Autism and Epilepsy
Researchers studying epilepsy found connections between autism and epilepsy. Less than 2% of the general population has epilepsy, but up to 33% of people with autism also have epilepsy. This could be good news for people with autism as CBD has been shown to help with epileptic seizures. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of a drug derived from marijuana in 2018. Epidiolex is a form of CBD used to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, two severe and rare kinds of epilepsy. Epidiolex is the first approved treatment for Dravet syndrome, according to the FDA. This leads researchers to think there is more work to do to discover if similar treatments could benefit people with autism.
How to Take CBD
There are several ways to consume CBD. One of the most effective ways is sublingual. Sublingual means that you are to drop the oil under your tongue, allowing it to absorb through the blood vessels concentrated in that area. A good rule of thumb for sublingual consumption is to drop the oil under the tongue and hold it there for about 20-30 seconds before swallowing the remaining oil. Relive Everyday’s RE-LIVE Tinctures are THC-free and come in flavors such as Watermelon, Natural, and Refreshing Mint. Taking CBD sublingually gets the CBD into the nervous system quickly.
Edibles such as Relive Everyday’s RE-ASSURE Gummies are another favorite way to take CBD. They are THC-free, fruit flavored, and mess-free. Our RE-ASSURE Gummies are perfect for those with sensitivities to taste and textures. The CBD in gummies may take up to an hour to take effect.
Topicals such as lotions and creams infused with CBD are another method of getting a dose of CBD. CBD topicals do not pass into the bloodstream. Instead, the CBD goes into the endocannabinoid receptors found under the skin. Topicals are helpful for pain, muscles, and inflammation – isolating your pain and inflammation and working directly. This method can take up to an hour to take effect.
